Teenage smokers fail to observe oral hygiene
In studies carried recently, it was discovered that adolescent smokers overlook the importance of dental hygiene. The smokers tend to neglect the required oral hygiene standards where they fail to clean their dental less than the required two times a day. For smokers, dental hygiene is very crucial and has to be observed even more times the recommended time for non smokers.
Smoking habits among teenagers is mostly attributed to poor school performance, poor socio-economic status and negative company. These habitats are contrary to the habits taught to the adolescents by their mothers.
The research carried out was instigated by Professor Sisko Honkala of Kuwait University and was later published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology. It was primarily based on an Adolescent Health review and Lifestyle analysis that was conducted in Finland.The majority of the population is unaware of the damages that smoking can inflict to your dental health especially when adopted at an early age. Some adolescent’s experiment smoking at an early age but if the habit persists to adulthood, it can cause detrimental damages to your dental health.
Peer pressure is the major cause of teenagers adapting the habit of smoking, and still the main reason as to why they persist to maintain the habit in their afterlife. According to Dr Nigel Carter, there was a need create awareness of the damages caused by smoking to the dental health by putting up dental health campaigns.
Dr Carter acknowledges that the teenagers have potently more oral related problems caused by the lifestyle they have chosen to lead. Unhealthy behavior adopted in early stages in life usually tends to leave a lasting impact according to the doctor. It is therefore advisable to observe dental hygiene at all times to avoid adverse infections.
