Sports drinks, have become a fashion beverage for youth in North America irrespective of their field of action, which were initially developed for effective and quick hydration of athletes. Though sports drinks, being consumed by athletes, are considered to be a substitute of juice or sugar soda but it is not the fact. Sports dinks, in fact, have more of sugar and acidic content to give a quick hydrating effect to the athletes but actually they cause damage to their teeth. We should know he causes of tooth decay and symptoms thereof before getting into the link of sports drinks with tooth damage.
Causes and symptoms of tooth decay
• Irrespective of age, tooth decay affects the damage to the teeth of children, youth and adults equally and cause ill-health in the mouth region. Tooth decay can cause tooth loss even in young age which can be prevented by adopting good hygienic and healthy oral habits.
• The formation of acidic content in the plaque of mouth by bacterias is the main cause of tooth decay. The poor hygienic condition of mouth generate a yellowish film on the tooth called plaque and the bacterias hidden in this plaque convert food components into acid to cause decay in the teeth and ultimately damage it. Tooth decay is caused by dissolving the enamel of the tooth by acid produced in the plaque to form cavities and ultimate damage.
• Tooth damage resulting from can cause serious oral health hazards as tooth sensitivity, pain in the gums, bleeding gums, and tooth loss ultimately in severe cases.
So, we see that acid content produced in the plaque cause ill-health in the mouth region and sports drinks declaredly have excessive acidic contents like Powerade or Gatorade which in combination with acid produced via plaque increase the chances of tooth decay to great extent.
